A guided tour of the exhibition will take place on the 7th August, from 7pm - 8:30pm

Sharon Adams | Sheena Devitt | Alison Fitzgerald | Nicola Gates | Ronan Lowry | Peter Surginor Featuring films by Northern Ireland Screen Digital Film Archive and TACA

In celebration of Northern Ireland’s rich craft landscape past and present, six makers were invited to produce new work in response to heritage footage from the Northern Ireland Screen Digital Film Archive. Presented by Mid-Antrim Museum, The Braid, and supported by R-Space Gallery and Northern Ireland Screen, Film Makers features stone carving, basket weaving, ceramics, furniture making, tools and handwoven textiles.

Film Makers emphasises the value of craft makers in the province and records a sample of their activities for future generations to enjoy through archive film. Visitors to The Braid during this year’s August Craft Month will find newly commissioned works by Sharon Adams, Sheena Devitt, Alison Fitzgerald, Nicola Gates, Ronan Lowery and Peter Surginor. These are accompanied by craft artefacts and six new films by TACA of the contemporary makers at work alongside the archive footage that inspired them.

Introduction to Tapestry Weaving (2-Day)

Friday 11 & Saturday 12 August 2017, 10am – 4pm | The Market Place Theatre & Arts Centre, Armagh

In this two-day workshop you will learn the foundation skills of tapestry weaving on a simple frame loom. As well as covering the basic techniques, the workshop will encourage individual expression and experimentation.

On day one we will focus on learning the basics of plain weave, creating shapes and textural techniques such as rya knotting and sumak, to create a small sampler. Working at your own pace, on day two you will have the chance to create a small abstract wall hanging, exploring texture, colour and composition. All materials will be provided but feel free to bring any favourite yarns from your own stash! The workshop is suitable for adults and young people over the age of 16.
